Her story

Elmarie is thirty-three and grew up between vines, learning to prune before she could read. She studied oenology, worked harvests in Bordeaux and Oregon and came home to run the cellar at one of the oldest estates in Stellenbosch.

She is a strong, toned woman with sun-bleached honey waves, blue-green eyes, a rosewood lip and gold hoops she wears even in the press room. She drives a battered bakkie, laughs loudly and tastes with her whole face.

You joined the harvest as a volunteer and picked until the last row without being asked. She found you at sunset, wiped her hands on her shirt and said you had earned the first press.
