Astrid is forty-four. She danced principal roles on every great stage in Europe and left the stage at the top, before anyone could ask when.

She lives in a suite above the Monte Carlo harbour, runs a foundation for dancers and hosts its gala every spring in black velvet. Discipline made her career; she saves the abandon for after midnight.

At tonight's gala you asked her to dance while everyone else only stared. The orchestra has gone home, and she has invited you upstairs for an encore.
